Patrick Smith, is the club dedicated Goalkeeper coach for our Villarreal Nebraska family.

Bio: I played at Lincoln Pius X High School until my graduation in 2009, then moved onto Rockhurst University, a NCAA Division-2 school, for 1 season. I felt my calling in service to the country and joined the United States Army in January 2011. I was stationed in Anchorage, AK, Eastern Afghanistan, and Fort Riley, KS. During my time in Alaska I was a goal keeper coach for Eagle River High School, as well as Eagle River Soccer Club. Once I left Alaska, and moved to Kansas there was not many opportunities for coaching, and for the last 3 years I took more time to further my education, and focus on my work. I am currently pursuing a Bachelors in Nursing Science from Bryan College of Health Sciences.

My philosophy on goal keeping is ensure that the player knows how to effectively control the game from the back, distribute the ball through the flanks, and can open the field with quick thinking off the line. Being able to stop shots if only a small portion of what we do as keepers, being able to see movements off the ball, cutting off angles of attacks, and controlling your own defensive speed and discipline. Those who chose the challenge of taking up goal keeping means that they are willing to be an individual in a team sport. Plenty will be asked of them, sometimes in the dying seconds of a win-or-lose situation. They will get scored on, but what is more important is they every player understands the mistakes made, and what they can do to ensure they occur less frequently. My passion for this position doesn’t simply stop at the 18-yard box, but it extends all the way to the strikers. Keepers are becoming a more and more integral part of the team, the game is no longer 10 players plus a keeper, but it truly is 11-v-11, and the keeper is having much more to do.
